Dr. Pete Girguis, Principal & Founder

What does Tallasia mean?

As Dr. Girguis was pondering names for this company, his young son heard him utter the word “thalassophile.” This word, originating from the Greek words thálassa (sea) and phílos (loving/friend), describes a person who is irresistibly drawn to the ocean.
Dr. Girguis’ son chimed in saying “so you’re a Tallasia guy?”  And so Tallasia Consulting came to be; it’s a name that reminds Dr. Girguis of who and what he loves most.

Testimonials

"“I have known Dr Girguis for over 20 years and have long admired his rare ability to span from the deeply technical aspects of instrument design to the scientific application of those systems in demanding environments. When I was preparing a report on harnessing environmental energy in the ocean, I turned to him for insight into seafloor chemical energy opportunities. He delivered an exceptionally thoughtful and comprehensive document that required no iteration and significantly shaped our subsequent approach. His ability to translate complex science into actionable guidance is outstanding. I strongly recommend him as a trusted, responsive, and highly expert resource.”

– Dr. James Bellingham, Director, Johns Hopkins Institute for Assured Autonomy and Bloomberg Distinguished Professor of exploration robotics.
"As a science communicator and storyteller, I’ve had the privilege of working with Pete for more than a decade. He has an uncanny ability to bring together people across disciplines and create a shared creative current, where scientists, storytellers, and creatives are all moving within the same flow, contributing from their respective strengths while shaping something collectively.

On camera and in audio, he is magnetic—a commanding, resonant voice paired with a clarity of thought that draws people in and carries them effortlessly into the heart of the science. He is also an exceptional generator of story, consistently uncovering narratives that are deeply rooted in the research yet expansive, imaginative, and profoundly engaging for broad audiences.

Despite being one of the most scientifically active people I know, he brings boundless enthusiasm to communication, continually finding inventive ways to weave storytelling into his work—and, in doing so, inspiring those of us around him to push further. He leads with both intellectual generosity and joy, making him not only an extraordinary collaborator, but one of the most widely respected and genuinely beloved people I have ever had the pleasure to work with."

– Jennifer Berglund, National Geographic Explorer and filmmaker

"In our National Science Foundation-sponsored master class, we help prepare scholars to become future Chief Scientists aboard deep-sea vessels, which often includes complex navigation of international policy and permitting, as well as issues of intellectual property. Pete thoughtfully unpacks the relevant details of contemporary international treaties - BBNJ, Nagoya, etc - in a comprehensive and cohesive way. Pete also demystifies the patent process in the context of these treaties, which is no easy feat! The end result is that Fellows have a more solid understanding of how to lead an expedition through these agreements, which expands opportunities for ocean science, exploration, and innovation for everyone involved. We all hope that Pete will join us again next year! "

– Dr. Randi Rotjan, Tufts University Associate Professor and Provost Catalyst Leader
